Preparing for Winter Storms

Preparing for Winter Storms

It’s important to plan ahead for those unexpected midwest winter storms. Winter storms can cause a number of issues within your home such as power loss or frozen water pipes. As we head into the colder months of the year, here are a few items to have on hand in your home in case of an emergency.

  • Water – In case your water pipes freeze or your water goes out, it’s crucial that you have backup to stay hydrated. The CDC recommends you keep at least one gallon per day for each person and pet in your home.
  • Extra medicine – Label all of your medication clearly and maintain a three-day supply of your medication in case of an emergency. You should consult your physician when preparing for winter storms.
  • Power source – A generator is your best option to maintain power in your home and keep appliances running – such as medical equipment. At a minimum, you should keep portable chargers and battery powered options available to keep your electronics charged.
  • Food – It’s best to keep non-perishable food items so you have options in case the power goes out. This is also a good time to stock up on food for your pets as well.
  • Flashlight and extra batteries – Both of these items will come in handy if the power goes out.
  • First aid kit – Bandages, antibiotic ointment, thermometer, antiseptic wipes are just a few things you should have in your first aid kit.
  • Toiletries – Personal care items are often forgotten about when planning for emergencies. A spare toiletry bag with tissues, toilet paper, and toothbrushes can be useful for these situations.
  • Heat – Make sure you have other ways to heat your home in case of a power outage, like a fireplace and extra blankets or clothing.
  • Full tank of gas – Try and fill your tank prior to the storm just in case the pumps shut down.
  • Radio – Radios are useful in the event that your phone dies or cannot be reached. A radio will help provide you with the most up to date information.
